Mrs. Hyacinth Irene Scales 119 East Woodrow St., succumbed today in a Bakersfield hospital. She was known affectionately as “Hy” to her many friends. Mrs. Scales had been a Linotype operator for the Daily Midway Driller for the past 11 years. Prior to coming to Taft she worked as an operator on various newspaper in Missouri. She was born in Jackson, Mo., May 16, 1898, and had been a resident of Taft for the past 15 years. Survivors include her husband, Archie Y., a son, Don S. of Riverside; two grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Myrtle S. Moll of Sikeston, Mo., and two nieces and two nephews. Mr. Scales, an employee of Burns Furniture Store, is well known on the West Side and is active in various lodges and clubs in the Taft area. Her son, Don, attended both the Taft city schools and Taft Union High School and is a pharmacist. He graduated from the University School of Medicine at San Francisco. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 3:00 p.m. in the Erickson and Brown Funeral Chapel. Rev. David Donnelly of First Baptist Church will officiate. Interment will be in the West Side Cemetery.
