Mr. Claude L. Walsh, Principal of the Taft Primary School, passed away at 7:25 a.m. last Saturday. He had served wit the Taft City School District since September, 1927, and had been principal of the Taft Primary School since 1950. He began his career in the Taft Schools as a physical education teacher. He later became a science teacher and vice-principal at the Lincoln School before being promoted to the position of principal at Taft Primary School. He was active in summer camp and playground work for many years. He was a pioneer in helping to establish Camp Condor, a summer camp for boys and girls on the West Side of Kern County. His playground leadership resulted in recreational programs in Taft that were considered as models throughout the state. For many years he was an active Boy Scout Leader and assisted in many projects for the benefit of youth through his affiliation with the Taft Kiwanis Club. He has also served as Treasurer of the Taft Kiwanis Club for the past three years. Mr. Walsh came to Taft from the bay area where he had been active in recreational work in Berkeley, Oakland, and San Jose. He held the A.B. and M.A. degrees from San Francisco State College. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pearl Walsh, who is a teacher at Taft’s Conley School, and three sons, Claude Jr. of Los Gatos, George of Merced, and Dick of Stockton. He is also survived by five grandchildren. Graveside services were held at the West Side District Cemetery in Taft at 4:00 p.m.
